Kambarumba Village, East Sepik Province

Super stoked held and saw my first spotted cuscus today at Kambarumba village in the Sepik. I’ve only ever seen one of these in West Papua high up in the canopy but never had a close look at one.

Unfortunately this guy (as it’s only the male cuscus that have spots) will be fattened up for eating as bush meat ,which is still well and truly alive in PNG as a source of protein, as many people live off just sago and fish in the Sepik River.

There’s a great conservation initiative called the Tenkile Conservation Alliance who have taught the people in the Torrocilli mountains how to grow rabbits as an alternative protein source.

Check out their project https://www.tenkile.com
